AI can be powerful, but in accessibility and communication, power alone is not enough. Trust matters.

At Kara, we do not treat AI as a black box that should decide everything on its own. We use AI where it adds value, especially in interpreting language and intent, then combine it with Kara’s own systems to make the result more structured, consistent, and fit for purpose.

That matters because plausible output is not the same as reliable output. In signed communication, accuracy depends not just on understanding language, but on representing meaning in a way that reflects the structure and realities of sign language.

AI as One Part of the System

There is a common belief that a sufficiently advanced AI system should handle everything from input to final output. In practice, that is rarely true for specialised products.

Sign language is not a direct word-for-word conversion from spoken or written language. It has its own structure, grammar, and expressive conventions. AI can help interpret source content, but interpretation alone is not enough to produce the right signed output.

At Kara, AI is one part of a broader system designed for signed communication. This allows us to shape outputs in a way that better reflects how sign languages work in practice.

The Role of KNS

A key part of that system is KNS, the Kara Notation System.

KNS is Kara’s structured, domain-specific way of representing meaning inside our platform. It bridges the gap between language understanding and signed output, giving us a consistent way to carry meaning through the system.

In simple terms, AI helps interpret the input, while KNS represents that meaning in a form that fits the needs of the product. General AI provides flexibility. KNS provides structure.

Together, they support output that is not only intelligent, but better aligned with the realities of signed communication.

Security and Control by Design

Trust also depends on how information is handled.

At Kara, we take security seriously. Our systems are designed so that data remains secure, and no third party can access information without explicit consent. We are ISO certified, and that commitment is reflected in how we design and operate our platform.

KNS supports this by giving us a structured way to handle meaning as it moves through our secure, localised system. Once input is interpreted, KNS helps carry it forward in a controlled and consistent way, creating a clearer path from input to output.

This is the approach we believe responsible AI requires: a clear role for AI, a clear system around it, and design that reflects the real complexity of communication.

At Kara, trust in AI is not something we assume. It is something we design and maintain, so our clients can trust their information is secure with Kara.
